Incorrect Login Attempts

Security measures are in place to reduce the risk of client accounts from being 'hacked' by those that simply try large number of passwords in hopes of guessing one used by the target client. While our measures are not as restrictive as many banks use (normally three bad attempts in a day and your account is locked until you make a personal visit to your branch), we no longer allow unlimited bad attempts.

Here are the basic restrictions on bad login attempts which apply to at least such items as pop3 e-mail, webmail, and ftp web site access.

  • If you provide 5 or more incorrect login attempts in less than 4 seconds, your IP may be disallowed further access to the server.
  • If you proivde 10 or more incorrect login attempts in the preceeding 60 minutes, your IP may be disallowed further access to the server.
  • If you proivde 20 or more incorrect login attempts during the current day, your IP may be disallowed further access to the server.
  • If you receive 10 or more incorrect passwords errors for the same username during the current day, your IP may be disallowed further access to the server.
  • If you provide 4 or more usernames with incorrect passwords during the current day, your IP may be disallowed further access to the server.

If you attempt too many incorrect logins and you get your IP locked out, you can do one of three things:

  • Fix the problem at your end and give IGS KW a call on the phone during business hours, be prepared to prove your identity.
  • Determine what your username/password is for sure, change your IP address, and try again. NOTE: You can ONLY change your IP address if you have a dynamic IP, i.e. you are not paying for a static IP. On a high speed connection you need to leave your modem and router off for at least 2 minutes to force an IP change. This may not work for cable based high speed service.

The bottom line is you need to know what your username/password is, too many incorrect attempts will cause you problems AND anyone else connected to the internet though the same connection. It is also important to remember that usernames and passwords are case sensitive ("abc" is NOT the same as "ABC").

If your e-mail program is set to automatically check your mail, gets a bad password remembered, your IP will likely get locked out. Having two e-mail programs running at once, webmail and outlook for example, can cause what appear to be password errors, ONLY one e-mail program, and ONLY one instance of it, can have your mailbox open at a time, or you will likely get password errors due to the conflict. If you require multiple devices to have access your e-mail, see how to configure for multiple devices.

If your mailbox was left open by ANY e-mail program, you may also see a password error, in this case your mailbox will close automatically in 15 minutes after the last commumications with the mail server providing none of your computers or other devices are holding the mailbox open.

In most case we can no longer tell you what your password is, we can only set it to something new (for security reasons), so either remember it somehow, or be prepared to prove your identity should you forget your password and need us to program a new one. Usernames and passwords are important pieces of information, protect them!
