Introduction

The general consensus seems to be that the Essenes were a small, unimportant sect that was formed about 150 BCE.

Philo (c 40CE) however, claims the Sect is larger and very old. He says in his time there were 4000 of the Sect in Egypt, while in Judea, members of the Sect, "Live in many cities and in many villages and in great societies of many numbers."

I will identify the people and events described in the Scrolls by placing them in the larger framework described by Philo.

This provides a written description of an organization called "The Community of God."
Illustrates the structure of the organization in diagram form
Identifies the Kittim in the "Commentary on Habakkuk Scroll"
Identifies the people behind the code words in the same scroll
Identifies the Date written, the first Teacher of Righteousness, the "New Covenant" and The Exhortation.
