A perfin postmarked May 16, 1897, from --ilton, N.B.

The explanation:

The letters in this perfin are almost certainly part of the word "PAID". The stamp would have initially been used on a cheque, cancelled with the "PAID" punch, then removed and re-applied to an envelope to be used as postage.
