The mystery:

Are these different patterns?

Hmmm...

The broken code hole appears on a stamp cancelled in Winnipeg on Nov. 25, 1924. More research need to be done to determine just when the code-hole pin broke.

The rest of the story:

The S4 perforator appears to have been relocated from Winnipeg, MB, to Moncton, NB. My collection has a gap in issues from 1935 (Sc. 212) to 1942 (Sc. 249). I assume that the move took place at some point during this time.

Summary:

Now that we know about the broken code hole pin, the period of usage reported for S3 in the BNAPS Handbook is suspect. These are the periods of usage that I can confirm for the two perforators.
