Milton Bradley: Gamemaster Series

Axis & Allies:

Great Game. The first one of the GS I played (1991/2). 299 pieces, 2-5 players. (Image on http://www.kw.igs.net/~tacit/aanda/index.htm#What)

Fortress America:

I have seen these for sale only on the net at rec.games.board.marketplace or alt.games and a used copy usually goes for over $40 US. (in rec.games.board.marketplace Dec 23/97 I saw two posts for $60 and $65!).

The picture on the side of my A&A box says its for 2-4 players and has 306 plastic pieces. It looks like a fractured USA and has 4 'zones' where the players start in with modern (1980s) type weapons/units.

Canada is greyed out; I suppose to stop it from participating and conquering the Yankee remnants :^)

I bought this game for $45 US in May 98. Haven't played it yet but will do so shortly

Conquest of the Empire:

"The first, which is often overlooked, was titled "Conquest of the Empire", set in the 2nd Century A.D.: The Roman Empire Under Siege; (this off the side of the box). So Conquest of the Empire was a part of the original GamesMaster Series." - Bill McClenden, 97.

From Lee's notes in Origins 'was originally called "Six Caesars"'.

(in rec.games.board.marketplace Dec 23/97 $250!!!)

February 1998 - I bought this game through a rec.games.board.marketplace auction. I haven't played it yet. I got it cheap as I was the only person bidding, (lucky timing) and only paid $75US!

I am working on a Conquest of the Empire Play By Email set up. As it stands the battles would take weeks to do via email. Will have more on this in the near future, and a link to a COTE page! Once I get more information :

Broadsides and Boarding Parties:

"... part of the series with Fortress and Shogun added later." - Matt Becker, 97.

'Broads Suds and Boring Parties' - Lee Enderlin :)

"Broadsides and Boarding Parties was originally published by a gaming store back east called The Citadel." - The Maverick, May 98

Shogun:

I have seen this game in a store (used copy) and saw it set up (also on the side of my A&A box). It is a game where the samurai are used to conquer feudal (13th-17th century) Japan. For 2-5 players with 406 pieces. It looks pretty good and has a few things different than A&A such as a 'hidden' or secret area where you set up defenses against other player's moves.

I have seen it re-released as "Samurai Swords" in a game store in my hometown of Waterloo, Ont. going for $50 CDN.

?

I've heard of another in the series. There is a 6th out there (perhaps what Lee was talking about i.e. Mike Gray's abandoned game).

"Mike Gray would not tell me even what era the "lost Gamemaster Series" game was, citing company secrets." - Lee Enderlin

As for which is the best of these and which are losers I can only go from the email I've been sent. Shogun is supposed to be very good, while Broadsides and Boarding Parties is not.

Even though I am interested in the GM Series I do not forsee me elaborating this site to include more information on them. I suggest going to news://rec.games.board for more information or to post a question on them.

Email Hasbro (mailto:consumer_support@hasbro.com) and tell them to reissue Conquest, Fortress, and Broadsides!
