Blow up for Large Europe
Liverpool Port Expansion Box

74" x 35" - Laminated - Full colour

We have the large playing area with the map in the center.  This is roughly 42" x 35".  Still twice as large as the Avalon Hill map for A&A E.

We have 12 Ports where ships are built.  The boxes are on either side of the center map. These are like the Yorkshire - Liverpool box shown below.

In the bottom left corner we have 20 Harbours where ships can seek shelter.  Examples include Rotterdam Netherlands, Toranto Italy, Southhampton and Scapa Flow UK, and St Johns Newfoundland.

The coloured boxes are for the small territories or the potentially crowded ones.  Tan is for UK, green for USA, red for USSR, light gray for Italy, dark grey for Germany, blue for France and Vichy France and a few others like dark green for Slovakia.  There are 55 of these boxes.  Three are not labeled.  A few are coloured for a specific nation but not for a specific territory.  These can be written on (laminated map allows for dry erase markers to be used).

At the top on both sides of the center are the 13 city boxes: three on the left, and ten on the right.  Cities are inside normal territories and act as a separate area to be conquered before the territory comes under the control of the attacker.  Only Infantry can defend the cities like London, Cairo, New York, Berlin, Paris, Budapest, and Konigsberg.

In the top right corner we have the 11 Train stations.  The stations are associated with most of the cities.  Trains allow for movement of Infantry, Artillery and Armour.

Along the bottom under the left side of the map we have the Geography Legend, the title and the Iron Crosses.
The Iron Crosses are awarded to the German navy when they stop the Special UK Convoy.  This is a special Transport flying a convoy flag (flag included in the expansion).  If the Transport makes it to London the UK gets a 10 IPC bonus.  The Transport then starts its journey again.  If the Germans or Italians sink the ship before it reaches London then an Iron Cross is awarded.  Each Iron Cross gives a 1 IPC propaganda bonus to Germany.

Scattered about the map are semi-transparent images from World War II, like the famous images of the Big Three at the Tehran conference, MacArthur with his pipe, Hilter & Mussolini in an open car, and Eisenhower's portrait.

The map above is not the final version.  At the time of publishing these web pages the map is nearing its final form.  It will probably be enlarged by an inch to accomodate a few changes (inclusion of the city Cairo.

Actual Size: 15" x 8"
The Liverpool Port Expansion Box.

This is where new ships are created for the UK (the UK also has the Hull Port).  Battleships take at least four turns to build, Cruisers and Aircraft Carriers require at least three turns, Destroyers and Escort Carriers need two turns and Submarines and Transports require one turn to build.

Each bullet shaped zone can only hold two naval units.  Each bullet is 3" long.  Each turn the ships move down the assembly line and are launched into action.

When you purchase a Battleship it must go on one of the Battleship images.

If you had two ships on the first zone, and two on the second and you purchased a Destroyer you could place the new Destroyer on the third zone (or fourth or fifth) or you could push one of the second zone ships backwards to the third zone and place the Destroyer in the second zone.  The time for bringing ships into the game is thus delayed, for the larger ships it takes more time.  This gives your enemies time to prepare and also reflects the true nature of naval war.  In World War II the US built many Carriers and new Battleships to take on the Japanese Fleet but setting aside money for the ships and actually having them in the water took many months and even years.  For the capitol ships the shipbuilding took a few years between the first rivet and the launch of the ship and even then there was work to be done on the now floating vessel.

The rest of the Expansion Box is for ships already in service and acts like a Harbour.
Harbours give some protection to Naval units in them.  They have an Anti Air Artillery factor and a can only be occupied by owners or allies of the nation that owns the territory the Port/Harbour belongs to.

Not all Ports can accomodate 10 ships under construction at the same time as Liverpool can.  Halifax and Leningrad can only build four ships (no Crusiers, Carriers or Battleships).  Odessa can only build six ships at a time (no Battleships).  The Soviet Union could and did build Battleships but for this game this ability does not exist.  The USSR does get a sizeable navy at the start of the game.

We also see some of the USSR.  Moscow is the hub of the Soviet rail system.  Like A&A E the Soviet factories cannot produce too many units per turn.  But there are many territories between Moscow and Berlin (six territories for the shortest route).  So the USSR should be a viable ally for the UK and USA for at least five turns (even if it didn't do any moves and just had some units along this route).

The territories around Moscow (and to the north) are Winter Zones.  These zones alter some units' performance in combat.  If playing seasons then it would only effect the game during the Winter/Storm season.
